Humble Beginnings

Growing up in the inner city area of Grants Pen in Kingston Jamaica, founder and head chef Andrea Levy-Moore was introduced to the “kitchen” at a very young age. Her cooking journey began at age seven when she would assist her grandmother, Mother B, around their coal stove in their outdoor kitchen. Mother B cooked and sold food at the local New Day All Age School during the week, and on the weekends in her glass case on the street, would sell fry chicken back, fry dumplings and fritters, among other delicious Jamaican street food. This would be the primary source of income that would send Andrea and her siblings to school. At every opportunity, Andrea would be by her grandmother’s side, learning the craft of the business. Although, as Andrea grew older, she often wondered how was her grandmother able to make a profit when she so often gave away her food for free to those in the community who did not have money to pay for it.

By the age of 12, Andrea migrated to Canada where her passion for food continued. Some of her first employment experiences as a teenanger were working at Popeyes restaurant, KFC, and Domino’s Pizza. She studied Journalism and went on to pursue a career in Communications, but her passion for food was always part of her core. She did private catering as side hussle and later owned and managed a Caribbean franchise restaurant in Mississauga, but the rules surrounding franchise ownership restricted her autonomy and creativity to produce the culinary masterpieces that she was made to do.

Along with her husband and business partner Linden, and their family, they moved to the beautiful town of Paris, Ontario. They quickly realized that there were no Caribbean cuisine restaurants close by and would have to drive to neighbouring cities to buy Caribbean food. It was then a lifelong passion and the needs of a community came together to bring forth Moore-ish.

Why the name Moore-ish?

In Jamaica if you give someone a meal, the highest compliment that they can pay you is to say that your food tastes moreish. The word moreish is an old British term that dates back to the late 1600’s. The formal definition of the word in the Oxford dictionary is:  a food or drink so good that you want to have more. An additional “o” is added in Moore-ish as a play on words to coincide with the Moore family name.
